Stainless Steel Metallographic Preparation
Specimen Preparation (Class 5 Procedures)
Metallographic Class 5 sample preparation

Description:

Stainless steels have high concentrations of chromium (>12%) and are generally relatively soft compared to heat treated steels. This makes stainless steel more susceptible to smearing.

Preparation Challenge:

Microstructural preparation of stainless steels is very similar to the preparation procedures for iron and steel. The primary difference is that final polishing with nanometer alpha alumina is required to maintain the inclusions in the stainless steel.
