Alumina

Alumina abrasive are typically tougher, duller, more durable abrasive as compared to SiC. Alumina grinding papers are more useful for very soft materials such as copper, alumninum, gold and silver as well as for refractory materials such as rhenium, tungsten and vanadium primarily because alumina does not fracture as easily and therefore embeds less into softer specimens.
